Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a collage group art therapy program on the cognitive function and depression among elderly individuals with dementia and to investigate the possibility of providing basic data to support similar clinical intervention programs. Subjects included 12 individuals with dementia randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. A total of 10 collage group art therapy programs were conducted in the experimental group, twice per week for 50 minute sessions; the control group was not treated. In order to investigate the program¡¯s effectiveness, both the mini mental status examination dementia scale (MMSE-DS) and Korean version of the short form of geriatric depression scale (SGDS-K) were administered before and after the study. The SPSS / WIN program (version 18.0) was used to analyze the data and the Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare cognitive function and depression. Results showed an improvement in both cognitive function and depression scores in the experimental group in comparison to the control group. These results suggest that collage group art therapy program is an effective tool to both improve cognitive function and reduce depression in elderly individuals with dementia.
